West Midlands Social Economy Awards – nominations now open

The West Midlands Social Economy Awards 2025 will celebrate organisations and individuals delivering outstanding social value across our region.

The awards recognise charities, social enterprises, co-operatives, community businesses, and also public and private sector organisations that deliver real social value.

This year’s awards feature 12 categories, split into three groups:

Social Economy Group Categories

Open to any social economy organisation that trades for a social purpose rather than personal profit.

  • Excellence in Community Impact – recognising a significant contribution to local communities and the economy.
  • Excellence in Creative Impact – celebrating organisations using arts, culture, or creative practice to deliver positive change.
  • Excellence in Tech Impact – for organisations harnessing technology and innovation to address social or environmental challenges.
  • Excellence in Health Impact – recognising impact in delivering health or social care benefits in the WMCA area.
  • Excellence in Green Impact – for organisations making a positive contribution to the environment and transition to Net Zero.
  • Excellence in Youth Impact – celebrating organisations that have made a positive difference to the lives of young people (under 25).

Individual Social Economy Organisations

Categories for specific types of social economy organisations. Entrants can also be considered in Group 1 without submitting a separate application.

  • Start-up Enterprise of the Year – for new organisations under 2 years old showing rapid growth in business and social impact.
  • Co-operative of the Year – recognising co-operatives making a significant impact through growth, employment or community benefit.
  • Community Business of the Year – celebrating community-owned or led businesses delivering positive social outcomes.
  • Social Enterprise of the Year – recognising outstanding contribution in terms of revenue growth, employment or social impact.

Public and Private Organisations

Recognising corporate and public sector bodies supporting the social economy.

  • Public Sector Organisation of the Year – for public bodies contributing to the growth and engagement of social economy organisations.
  • Corporate Organisation of the Year – for private sector businesses supporting and engaging with the social economy.

Local businesses inspired at King’s Award for Enterprise Masterclass

Business leaders from across the region came together this week to gain insight into what it takes to win one of the UK’s most coveted business accolades

The King’s Award for Enterprise Masterclass, hosted at Sandwell College on Tuesday 10 June, provided expert advice, inspiration and practical tips for businesses interested in applying for the King’s Award for Enterprise.

Celebrating excellence and sharing insight

The event opened with a welcome from Lisa Capper, CEO and Principal of The Sandwell Colleges, who highlighted the colleges’ commitment to supporting skills and enterprise across the region.

Attendees then heard from Derek Anderson CBE, Lord Lieutenant of the West Midlands, who underlined the value and significance of the King’s Awards in recognising business excellence across categories including Innovation, International Trade, Sustainable Development and Promoting Opportunity through Social Mobility.

Tom Westley DL, Chair of the West Midlands Lieutenancy, delivered a presentation explaining the application process, offering insights into what makes a standout submission and encouraging more SMEs to get involved.

This was followed by a presentation from Leanne Jordan, COO of Nourish3d, who shared her business’ award-winning journey and spoke about the tangible benefits of winning, from PR and brand awareness to recruitment and credibility.

Local voices, national success

After a networking break, Sandwell Business Ambassador, Paul Hull, Managing Director of KMB Shipping Group, gave a powerful presentation on how the award helped grow his company’s international trade, driving a 1,000% increase in global enquiries and a 25% uplift in international turnover.

The event concluded with a dynamic Q&A panel featuring Paul Hull, Leanne Jordan, Tom Westley DL, and John Wood DL, where guests had the opportunity to pose questions directly to those with first-hand experience of the awards.

Several Sandwell Business Ambassadors were in attendance, offering guidance to businesses considering applying. Ambassadors Paul Hull and John Wood DL played key roles at the event, with Paul delivering his story and John participating in the Q&A panel. Sandwell businesses triumph at Express & Star Business Awards 2025

Sandwell’s business community achieved huge success last night at the Express & Star Business Awards 2025, with two local companies securing top accolades and another earning recognition as a finalist.

The prestigious awards ceremony, held in Wolverhampton, celebrated outstanding achievements across the Black Country and beyond.

Doocey Group and A&M Pure Precision

Tipton-based Doocey Group, a family run civil engineering firm, won the Growth & Innovation Award, sponsored by Express & Star. The judges commended the company’s strategic expansion into high growth sectors such as electric vehicle charging and green energy. Doocey Group’s success stems from securing major contracts and its commitment to nurturing talent through their apprenticeship programmes, reinforcing its role as a cornerstone of Sandwell’s economy.

Meanwhile, A&M Pure Precision, based in Smethwick, was crowned Manufacturing Champion of the Year, sponsored by Collins Aerospace. Renowned for crafting high value, bespoke components for industries like aerospace and Formula 1, the company impressed the judges with its investment in state-of-the-art machinery and staff development. Its impressive client portfolio, including industry giants like BAE and Rolls Royce, highlights their position as a leader in precision engineering.

Lord Combustion Services

Oldbury’s Lord Combustion Services also made its mark as a finalist for the Sustainability Award. The company has earned praise for its leadership in providing environmentally friendly commercial heating and hot water solutions. Lord Combustion Services – sustainability award finalist

Oldbury-based commercial heating specialists Lord Combustion Services was recognised as a finalist for the Sustainability Award last night at the 2025 Express & Star Business Awards. While the company didn’t take home the trophy, being shortlisted highlights the positive impact their making on the region’s journey to net zero.

Lord supports over 1,000 customers across the West Midlands. The business is known for helping clients reduce emissions and improve efficiency, particularly through retrofitting older buildings with energy-efficient heating and hot water systems.

In recognition of their success, Sarah Coombes, MP for West Bromwich, recently visited Lord’s headquarters in Oldbury to learn more about the firm’s contribution to the region’s sustainability efforts. During the visit, she met with Lord Combustion Services Director Emma Tibbetts and was given a tour of the facility, including insight into the company’s progress with heat pump installations, hybrid systems and renewable energy technologies.

A sustainability driven approach

Lord Combustion Services has made significant strides in reducing its environmental footprint. The company signed the West Midlands Net Zero Business Pledge in 2022 and has since implemented a wide range of initiatives, including transitioning its fleet to hybrid vehicles, refurbishing and recycling equipment and supporting clients with low-carbon heating upgrades.

Lord Combustion Services Director Emma Tibbetts said:

“We were able to talk about the progress on sustainable heating and hot water solutions including heat pumps as well as our work enabling our customers to reduce their energy usage, manage budgets and run their operations more efficiently.

We were really pleased that as our local MP Sarah Coombes was able to visit Lord Combustion Services.”

Speaking after her visit, Sarah Coombes MP said:

“It was fantastic to see the impact that Lord Combustion Services is making by introducing energy-efficient heating and hot water solutions to businesses and organisations across the West Midlands.

With increasing focus on net zero initiatives, their work in leading the way on new technology such as heat pumps is playing a vital role in supporting the economic success of local businesses.”

With a workforce of nearly 50 and clients including NHS sites, over 300 schools, public sector organisations and local landmarks like Edgbaston Stadium, Lord continues to play a key role in maintaining and upgrading essential infrastructure. Their commitment to sustainability sets a strong example for businesses navigating net zero.

The Express & Star Business Awards are back for 2025, once again shining a spotlight on the businesses that help drive economic growth, innovation and community impact across the Black Country and Staffordshire.

Recognising success across a wide range of industries, these prestigious awards celebrate the resilience, talent and achievements of businesses large and small.

With 13 categories available, including two new additions for 2025, the awards provide an incredible opportunity for local businesses to gain recognition. Black Country Chamber Business Awards back for 2024

The annual Black Country Chamber Business Awards will this year announce winners in fourteen different categories. The awards are free to enter and the deadline for submissions is Monday 16 September. For 2024, the awards will take place on Thursday 21 November at the University of Wolverhampton.

Young entrepreneurs on the rise: EPIC Awards

Young entrepreneurs are rising. More young people than ever are turning to running their own business – and these awards celebrate them.

​The EPIC Young Entrepreneur Awards is a platform to celebrate and recognise the achievements of young people. Especially those who have faced adversity and/or the care of a local authority, to become a startup business.

In 2022, the EPIC Awards launched, announcing eight inspirational young entrepreneurs from across the UK as winners. On the back of this success, the 2023 EPIC Awards became an even bigger event.

EPIC hopes that its 2024 Awards will be double the size again. Being held at the Burlington Hotel in central Birmingham, the event will include:

  • An entrepreneurs conference
  • Live entertainment
  • Guest speakers
  • Drinks reception and food.

What is EPIC?

EPIC is part of the Martin James Foundation, a charity set up to improve the lives of young people around the world. The founders established EPIC to support the growth of young, aspiring entrepreneurs between the ages of 16-25. It places a particular emphasis on those from disadvantaged, displaced or care backgrounds.

EPIC’s three-month programme equips young adults with the skills and knowledge to turn their dreams into reality and become their own bosses.

Since the 2022 Young Entrepreneur Awards, EPIC has seen a sharp increase in the number of new applicants to its programme. It has also seen more interest in mentoring and providing support to its growing community.

Young Entrepreneur Awards

EPIC’s Young Entrepreneur Awards are free to enter for young business owners and entrepreneurs. The awards recognise the achievements of young business owners who have faced challenges and found success. They celebrate their entrepreneurial creativity and passion.

The awards allow entrepreneurs to gain valuable support and win a £500 grant for their business in each category.

The criteria for entry include:

  • The nominee’s business must already be established and operating for at least six months
  • The founder must be aged under 25 years old.

FSB small business awards open for entries

It’s time to send your entries in to the FSB Celebrating Small Business Awards 2024. There are twelve categories, open to all small businesses and self-employed people from anywhere in the UK. There is even a brand new category for 2024 celebrating franchise businesses.

This year, the FSB (Federation of Small Businesses) is celebrating 50 years of supporting small businesses in the UK. Winning, or being shortlisted for, one of its prestigious awards is a great way to gain national recognition for your business success. 

Sponsored by Tyl by NatWest and others, the awards are free to enter. Finalists get an invitation to a free networking event in March, and a free ticket to the awards ceremony. This takes place at the Winter Gardens Empress Ballroom in Blackpool on Thursday 9 May 2024.

There are twelve categories in the FSB Celebrating Small Business Awards, which means twelve chances for your business to shine. The categories for this year are:

Congratulations to A&M EDM on two big awards

A&M EDM has picked up two awards this month. The Smethwick manufacturer was named SME of the Year at the Make UK Midlands and East awards. It also took home the Excellence in Manufacturing and Engineering trophy at the Black Country Chamber Business Awards.

Mark Wingfield and Arthur Watts founded A&M EDM in 2002. Initially a two-person start-up with one rented machine, the company now has over 80 employees across two sites and annual sales of over £7m. It provides precision manufacturing services to many sectors including aerospace, automotive, Formula 1 and motorsports, deep sea and space exploration.

About Make UK

Make UK is a membership organisation which champions and celebrates British manufacturing and manufacturers. Its holds annual Manufacturing Awards, regionally at first and then with a national final, to cast a spotlight on manufacturers’ achievements.

A&M EDM took the coveted ‘SME of the Year’ trophy at Make UK’s Midlands and East awards. According to Make UK, this award champions:

“Businesses with less than 250 employees who have blazed a trail within the manufacturing sector. They will have led by example and developed progressive best practice for others in the industry. They will have shown exceptional initiative, boldness and dynamism, as well as exemplary management practices”.

Sustainable growth and continuous investment in people and equipment

The Make UK judges praised A&M for sustainable growth, innovation, rapid response and continuous investment in people and equipment. In the last year alone, the company has invested £1m in new machines. It has also installed 66 solar panels at its Middlemore Road site and taken on four new apprentices.

The A&M EDM team will now go through to the Make UK national awards, attending a gala dinner at St Paul’s Cathedral in January.

Black Country Chamber Business Awards 2023

A&M EDM also won the Excellence in Manufacturing and Engineering category at the Black Country Chamber Business Awards this month. These annual awards promote the “best of the region” and welcome 500 individuals to a ceremony which this year took place at Wolverhampton Racecourse.

‘Made in the UK, Sold to the World’ Awards entries open in November

The Department for Business and Trade’s 2024 ‘Made in the UK, Sold to the World’ Awards will open for entries on Friday 10 November. 

The Made in the UK, Sold to the World Awards recognise and celebrate the global trading success of SMEs from across the UK.

The opening entry date for the awards is Friday 10 November, during this year’s International Trade Week (6 to 13 November 2023).

Award categories

There are ten award categories and this year’s categories are: 

  • Agriculture, food and drink 
  • Consultancy and professional services 
  • Creative industries
  • Education and edtech 
  • Financial services and fintech
  • Healthcare 
  • Infrastructure and engineering 
  • Low carbon energy 
  • Manufacturing, advanced manufacturing and construction 
  • Retail and consumer goods.

There will be one winner from each category and up to three highly commended businesses.

Black Country Chamber Business Awards 2023: submit your entries now

Don’t miss your chance to submit an entry for the Black Country Business Awards – celebrating ‘talent, tenacity and transformation’ in our region.

The annual Black Country Chamber Business Awards will this year announce winners in thirteen different categories. The awards are free to enter and the deadline for submissions is 5pm on Monday 11 September. For 2023, the theme is celebrating ‘talent, tenacity and transformation’ in our region.

Winners will be announced at a gala dinner at Wolverhampton Racecourse on Thursday 9 November.

Celebrating social value at the Black Country Chamber Business Awards

James Cash is managing director of Superfast IT, which won Outstanding Support to the Armed Forces in 2022. He said: “I strongly encourage other companies to explore these opportunities and enter the awards. Winning isn’t just an honour, it reflects alignment with values that strengthen our community and drive progress across the region.”

Halesowen BID won the Business Commitment to the Community Award in 2022. BID manager Vicky Rogers said: “As an organisation dedicated to developing and providing local services and support, awards like this strengthen our commitment and motivate us to continue our work.”
